Wawanesa Wee Care New Building Kick Off A Huge Success!
Saturday, November 22nd, Wawanesa Wee Care finally hosted the new building announcement, steak supper and fundraiser. The evening began at 4pm with a happy hour, followed by a delicious steak supper complete with a baked potato bar and homemade buns, followed by speeches and presentations. The evening ended with mingling and music.
The purpose of the evening was twofold. Wee Care realized they could no longer wait on the province to announce their project, and they needed to continue fundraising in order to fill the new building with toys, equipment, furniture and appliances.
Wawanesa Wee Care was offered a chance at a 100% funded new building, as opposed to a building twice the size at a price of $1.9 million dollars, for which Wee Care would be on the hook for 40% of the bill. The offer of 100% funding meant Wee Care would then keep their current space in the school for 16 preschoolers, and the new building would house 16 new preschool spaces and 4 infant spaces. This opportunity was welcomed by a committee weary from researching floor plans, government policies and fundraising ideas, and realizing the community would be hard pressed to raise even 40% of the projected costs. The 100% funded building will be funded through the Family Choices Building Fund and the Public Schools Finance Board. This means the owner of the building will be Southwest Horizon School Division and Wawanesa Wee Care will be the tenant. This is attainable through the already strong partnership between Wee Care, the school and the division. The Family Choices Building Fund was in place to only fund ‘new spaces’, meaning if we build a facility for 32 preschoolers, the fund would only help us build the space needed for the 16 additional spaces, not our existing 16 spaces, hence the program remaining in the school and the new spaces in the new building.
The building we are anxiously awaiting on will be able to house 16 preschool children, as well as 4 infant spaces, something that is an extreme need in our community. Because we are keeping our preschool program in the school as well, we will need to furnish the new building completely. Shopping for an early learning facility is not always budget-friendly. Cribs, toys and most equipment will need to be of high standards, and most likely need to be purchased from a specific child care catalogue. The items Wee Care has chosen are from a company that has an office in Winnipeg, which will cut down on shipping costs. The new facility will also have a full kitchen, which means there will be a hot lunch program in Wee Care’s future. Fridge, stove, microwave and industrial dishwasher will be needed to comply with Public Health. In total, we will need about $100,000 to fill the daycare in order to be able to open. We already have half of that in the bank, thanks to the previous years of fundraising.
Special thanks to the community members who came out to support us on the 22nd. The turnout was a small, but generous crowd. Thanks to Bruce Gullett, Jan McDonald and Carolyn Cory for speaking at our event. Carolyn’s speech just reaffirmed the amazing school division we are proud to be a part of, supporting play based learning to better ready our preschoolers for school and life!
Presentations were made by the Lioness($1000), the Rebekah’s ($1500), Roger Guy of Community Futures Westman ($5000) and the Brandon and Area Community Foundation ($10,000). Guild Insurance also came forward to offer the purchase of our 4 infant cribs as well as the discovery mirrors for the infant room walls ($1500). There are still donations rolling in, but to date the profits from the evening are in excess of $30,000! What a simply amazing community we live in!
Special thanks to Mavis and Jim Brown, Brain Sprirrell, Glynn Warnika, Kevin Zabowski, Sandra Smith, Cliff Cullen, Wawanesa Turf Club, Brent Hauser, and SHSD for all of your continued support of the project right from the start.
Thanks to Justin and Jamie Smith for the donation of Winnipeg Jets tickets for us to raffle, to Bruce, Sandi and Monica Gullett for the donation towards or Vegas Trip, to Milshoff colonly for the donation of our potatoes, to The Grocery Box and Donnalee Vertz for the delicious steaks (and custom delivery by Donnalee), and to those who donated door prizes.
The winner of the Jets tickets was Perry Gullett, of the 50/50 ($450) was Jan Reid, and the lucky purchaser of the trip to Vegas was Jason Wilkinson! Thanks to everyone who bought supper tickets but could not attend, as well as all who purchased raffle tickets.
Thanks to the helpers for the evening, Teresa Simpson, Jamie Smith, Mavis and Jim Brown, Kathryn Rogers, Suzanne Hauser, Marcie Sexton, Melanie Lane Brett McGregor, Kevin Cullen and our chef Brent Hauser. Sharon, Margaret and Barbara were our outstanding bartenders, and we thank you!
We are hoping for a February move in date. Should you ever have any questions about the new building, Jenn will be happy to answer them or point you in the right direction.
