Grand opening of new facility
Wawanesa Wee Care hosts grand opening of its new facility!
The weather was chilly, but hearts were warm! Friday May 8th was the official Grand Opening of the New standalone child care facility for Wawanesa Wee Care Inc. Board members, staff, parents and children all welcomed the community to have their first tour of the new facility, located on the ground of Wawanesa School.
‘It’s a day we have been dreaming of for almost 10 years!’ says Jenn Cullen, director of the facility, which now boasts two physical locations. “We still occupy one classroom and one shared space in the school. Our Kinder kids and Junior Kinder kids will stay in our classroom space in the school, which is a dream for transitioning into Kindergarten. Our school age program runs out of the schools multi purpose room before and after classes and on all no school/in-service/ holiday days.’ Cullen is proud of the partnership they have with the school and its staff. ‘It just makes sense. We are all striving to enrich the lives of the children we serve. We have the same goals, so the partnership is a constant goal for us.’
The new facility, which was fully funded through the Family Choices Building Fund, now houses 4 infants and 16 additional preschoolers. ‘It is so nice to finally call families off of our waiting list to tell them we have room for them. Child Care is one of the biggest struggles parents face, and to tell them we can alleviate that stress is exciting for us.’ The new facility opened its doors for its tiny customers in April 20th. “We expected a few glitches in our first operating weeks, but so far so good! The staff has been flexible and supportive of each other, and the families were so happy to finally see the day we made our dream a reality.’
The Grand opening consisted of greetings being brought forward from the School Division Superintendent (Carolyn Cory), a school trustee (Jan McDonald), the school principal (Brent Hauser, the RM of Oakland-Wawanesa (rep Bob McDonald),MLA Cliff Cullen and long standing board member Heather Heinrichs. New Board member, Kristen Brown was the MC for the evening, and called upon all of the entities that helped make the project possible to put their handprint on a giant board that will be displayed in the new playground, which is still under construction. “We didn’t want a traditional ‘ribbon cutting’ “said Cullen. “We wanted something that showed that this project is bringing groups together and strengthening our community. It takes a village to raise a child, and that is a motto our village can proudly say they uphold.”
