Wawanesa Wee Care Update
Progress continues on the new Wawanesa Wee Care Daycare building.
“We have rafters, and the walls are up!” says Director Jenn Cullen.
The new building will house part of the daycare, while the current location will remain open. Originally, it was planned that approximately 60% of the funding required for the new building would be secured from the Public School Finance Board through the Family Choices Building Fund, with the additional 40% required being acquired through Southwest Horizons in the form of a 20 year mortgage, but those plans changed earlier this year.
It was found that if the original building plan was downsized, the entire project could be funded through the Family Choices Building Fund.. The new space will accommodate 16 preschoolers and four infants, and the 16 spaces currently being used in the school will be retained.
While the expansion is exciting, the change in plans also means that the new facility will need to be entirely furnished.
“We need appliances, toys, furnishings, everything,” says Cullen. “In all, we need about $100,000 worth of stuff. And of course the things we need for daycare children is of very high standards, and with those standards, comes a price. For example, we can’t just buy a regular kitchen dishwasher we need an industrial dishwasher that could cost up to $7000. Toys, furniture and equipment is all very pricy when you are order for child care use.”
The daycare will be holding a fundraiser on the 22nd of November, in order to fill the daycare with all of the necessary items.
“We're holding a steak night fundraiser,” explains Cullen. “Happy hour begins at four, supper from five to eight, and at eight o'clock, we'll have some announcements and speeches and an explanation of the progress on the new building. We're hoping to have a big ticket item to auction off, as well. After the formal part of the evening, there will be a time for socializing. Cullen says there will be school board members and division reps to mingle in the crowd and answer any questions.
She goes on to explain that there will be pictures of everything that the new center requires on display, and attendees will be able to select the item that they wish their donation to go toward. There will also be a 50/50 draw, and with tickets having been sold from this for nearly a month, the cash prize promises to be big. Raffle tickets will also be sold during the fundraising evening for a pair of Winnipeg Jets tickets.
“Donations are welcome at any time, and we are a nonprofit, so tax receipts will be issued for every donation.”
Cheques can be made payable to Wawanesa Wee Care New Building Fund, and either mailed to Box 3, Wawanesa, Manitoba, R0K 2G0, or dropped at the daycare.
Tickets for the fundraising evening are available in advance and cost $30 per person, but there are only 200 steaks ordered, so get your tickets soon!
The new facility is expected to open in February 2015
